Licences & sources

Lumen bundles Scripture and centuries-old prayers. Being precise about where each text comes from is part of taking them seriously.

Bible translations

All six editions in the app are in the public domain, which is why they can be shipped inside the app rather than streamed from a licensing service. Texts are prepared from the editions published by eBible.org.

EditionStatus
Berean Standard Bible (BSB)Public domain, dedicated by the publisher
King James Version (KJV)Public domain
World English Bible (WEB), with ApocryphaPublic domain
Douay-Rheims 1899 American Edition (DRA)Public domain
Menge-Bibel (1939)Public domain
Reina-Valera 1909 (RV1909)Public domain

Copyrighted translations, among them the NIV, ESV, NLT, NABRE and Reina-Valera 1960, are deliberately absent. They are licensed commercially, and shipping them without a licence would be both unlawful and unfair to their publishers. If interest justifies the cost, a licence is the route we would take.

Prayer texts

The guided prayers use traditional, public-domain wordings in each language. They are not machine translations of one another: the English “Our Father” is its own canonical text rather than a rendering of the German Vaterunser, and each language uses the form actually prayed in it.

Typefaces

  • Newsreader by Production Type, SIL Open Font License 1.1. Used for verses, prayers and headings.
  • Geist and Geist Mono by Vercel, SIL Open Font License 1.1. Used for interface text.

Software

  • supabase-swift: MIT licence. Connects the app to its database and authentication.
  • purchases-ios by RevenueCat: MIT licence. Keeps track of whether a subscription is active.
  • Next.js, React and Tailwind CSS: MIT licence. This website.

A full, versioned list of third-party licences is available inside the app under Settings → Legal → Licences.

Artwork

The illustrations, meaning the verse backgrounds, the section paintings and the fourteen journey postcards, were made for Lumen and are not licensed for reuse. If you would like to write about Lumen and need images, ask at info@lumenprayer.app and we will send you a set.
